The study reported here sought to examine the ethical orientations of business managers and business students in Singapore. Data were obtained using Defining Issue Test. Analysis of Variance revealed that age, education and religious affiliation had influenced cognitive moral development stages of the respondents. Vocation, gender and ethnicity did not seem to have affected moral judgement of the subjects. Contrary to the general view, both business students and business managers demonstrated the same level of sensitivity to ethical dimensions of decision-making. (...) How, asks Françoise Dastur, can philosophy account for the sudden happening and the factuality of the event? Dastur asks how phenomenology, in particular the work of Heidegger, Husserl, and Merleau-Ponty, may be interpreted as offering such an account. She argues that the “paradoxical capacity of expecting surprise is always in question in phenomenology,” and for this reason, she concludes, “We should not oppose phenomenology and the thinking of the event. We should connect them; openness to phenomena must be (...) identified with openness to unpredictability.” The article offers reflections in these terms on a phenomenology of birth. (shrink)

La question que Martin Heidegger a posée à l'ensemble de la tradition occidentale est celle du sens de son concept fondamental, celui de l'être. En révélant que c'est à partir du temps que nous comprenons l'être, il a montré que la philosophie trouve son origine dans l'existence d'un être qui ne peut plus être compris, comme le veut la philosophie moderne depuis Descartes, comme un sujet centré sur lui-même. La question du temps n'est donc pas pour lui une question philosophique (...) parmi d'autres, mais celle qui seule peut donner accès à ce qui constitue l'humanité comme telle. Ce que Martin Heidegger accomplit en posant la question du rapport de l'être et du temps, c'est cette " révolution du mode de penser " que requiert la prise en vue de l'essentielle finitude de l'homme et de l'être. La mise en évidence de l'historialité foncière de la pensée philosophique implique que celle-ci ne puisse plus se définir comme une pure théorie et qu'elle exige un engagement existentiel qui ne la met pas à l'abri de l'erreur. I would like to show how with Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Levinas, we have to do with three different ways of understanding the experience of the other. For Sartre it is a visual experience, the experience of being looked at by the other, so that the experience of the other is understood as a confrontation; for Merleau-Ponty, the experience of the other necessarily implies coexistence and what he calls intercorporeality, so that for him the other is never to be found in (...) front, but instead beside me, in reciprocity with me; for Levinas, the experience of the other is the experience of a non-reciprocity, of an assymetrical relation, because the experience of the other is for him an ethical and not an ontological experience, and because this experience of the face of the other is the experience of a speaking and not in the first place corporeal presence. There are consequently three different ways of finding an access to the other : the look for Sartre, intercorporeality for Merleau-Ponty and the face for Levinas. (shrink)

Ce qui a fait naitre l'emerveillement des premiers penseurs grecs, c'est qu'il y a quelque chose plutot que rien, et c'est la ce qui a donne le coup d'envoi a cette pensee de l'etre qui s'est developpee de Parmenide a Aristote et qui constitue le fondement de la philosophie occidentale. On trouve cependant, deja dans la pensee grecque, une denegation de la possibilite d'un discours sur l'etre, d'abord chez Gorgias, contemporain de Socrate, puis chez le fondateur de l'ecole sceptique, Pyrrhon. Et a l'epoque meme ou Parmenide ecrivait son poeme, une pensee de la vacuite et du neant commencait a se developper en Orient dans le cadre du bouddhisme, laquelle met profondement en question la notion meme d'ontologie. Or c'est precisement cette pensee du rien qui resurgit en Occident a la fin de l'age classique, avec ce premier philosophe veritablement moderne qu'est Kant, dans son Essai sur les grandeurs negatives et cette Table du Rien qui, dans La Critique de la raison pure, clot l'Analytique transcendantale. Et c'est le concept de negativite qui va former chez Hegel la matrice meme de la pensee dialectique, alors que celui du neant constituera le coeur de la critique du nihilisme qu'entreprendra Nietzsche, avant de redevenir, avec le Heidegger de Qu'est-ce que la metaphysique?, avec le Sartre de L'Etre et le neant, et avec le dernier Merleau-Ponty, auteur de ce livre inacheve qu'est Le Visible et l'Invisible, un theme fondamental de la pensee de l'apparaitre.Une telle pensee du neant et de la negation traversant la frontiere qui separe l'Orient de l'Occident, il s'agira donc, en prenant comme reference majeure la pensee heideggerienne, d'en interroger les diverses figures, d'abord chez Gorgias et Pyrrhon, puis chez Nagarjuna, le plus grand penseur du bouddhisme indien (ii-iiie siecle) et chez Nishida (1870-1945), representant fameux de l'ecole de Kyoto et du bouddhisme zen, avant d'en venir a l'idealisme allemand avec Kant et Hegel, a la question du nihilisme europeen avec Schopenhauer, Nietzsche et Heidegger, puis a la phenomenologie avec Husserl, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty et Maldiney. Telling Time takes up Heidegger's ideas of a "phenomenological chronology" in an attempt to pose the question of the possibility of a phenomenological language that would be given over to the "temporality of being" and the finitude of existence. The book combines a discussion of approaches to language in the philosophical tradition with readings of Husserl on temporality and the early and late texts of Heidegger's on logic, truth and the nature of language. As well as Heidegger's "deconstruction" of logic (...) and metaphysics Dastur's work is informed by Derrida's deconstruction of the metaphysics of presence and Nietzschean genealogy. Appealing as much to Humboldt's philosophy of language as to Hölderlin's poetic thought, the book illuminates the eminently dialectical structure of speech and its essential connection with mortality. The object of the paper is the attempt at retracing Heidegger’s conception of the relation of time and being from his major work “Being and Time” to the lecture he gave in 1962 on “Time and Being.” In order to explain the transformation of Heidegger’s thinking between 1927 and 1962, the emphasis is put on the new understanding of the oblivion of Being as belonging to the essence of Being itself, as well as on the analysis of the double meaning, (...) temporal and ontological of presence and on Ereignis, the “event of appropriation,” which is the new name given of the relation between man and Being. On sait que, depuis la parution des Recherches logiques de Husserl, le terme de phenomenologie ne designe plus, comme c'etait encore le cas chez Hegel, une discipline particuliere, mais une nouvelle conception de ce que doit etre la philosophie. Ce qui a en effet donne a l'entreprise husserlienne sa fecondite, c'est l'idee, reprise aux anciens, que le travail philosophique doit etre mene en commun et exige par consequent le concours de plusieurs penseurs. Mais ce qui rassemble ceux-ci, c'est moins l'unite (...) d'une doctrine et l'appartenance a une ecole de pensee que la pratique d'une methode. De ce mouvement phenomenologique, auquel appartiennent tant de philosophes du siecle dernier, il n'est certes pas question de dresser un iventaire exhaustif. Ce que l'on se propose simplement ici, c'est d'en donner un apercu qui mette d'ailleurs moins l'accent sur les noms propres des penseurs que sur les problemes qu'ils ont partages. Les essais reunis dans ce volume sont en effet tous consacres a un petit nombre de questions fondamentales - celles du langage et de la logique, du moi et de l'autre, de la temporalite et de l'histoire, de la finitude et de la mortalite -, au sujet desquelles un dialogue a paru se nouer entre certaines des figures les plus eminentes de la nebuleuse phenomenologique: Husserl et Heidegger surtout, mais aussi Fink, Patocka, Merleau-Ponty, et plus pres encore de nous, Gadamer, Levinas, Ricoeur. Translators’ abstract: This article considers the concept of originary dissension in Reiner Schürmann’s. The ultimate conditions of experience are natality and mortality, which universalize and singularize respectively. These conditions are in originary dissension with one another in the sense that they cannot be resolved into a unified whole. But natality institutes the universal precisely by denying the mortal singular. Recognizing and sustaining the originary dissension therefore requires prioritizing mortality over natality.

This paper is dedicated to the analysis of some important points of Patočka’s Heretical Essays on the Philosophy of History in order to question his major thesis of the common origin of philosophy, politics and history shared by Hannah Arendt and based on Husserl’s and Heidegger’s phenomenological conception of the Greek beginning. It tries to show the complexity of Patočka’s conception of Europe, which on one side can be understood as falling into Eurocentrism, but on the other side brings to (...) light the dark face of modern European nihilism and planetary domination and tries to find a remedy for it by appealing to a philosophical conversion leading to the recognition of the diversity of human culture. Une première version de cette réflexion a été publiée en 1994, destinée aux étudiants et aux lecteurs s'intéressant à quelques grandes questions fondamentales. Cette nouvelle version largement remaniée et augmentée est aussi une réflexion sur la mort et la finitude, non pas la recherche d'un remède contre la mort mais une ouverture à la mort comme destin de tout mortel, un essai pour parvenir à trouver dans la finitude du temps, c'est-à-dire dans la mort elle-même, la ressource de la vie, (...) d'une vie qui ne "recule" pas devant la mort mais accepte de compter avec elle.
